Next month sees a meeting of the Hackney Community Engagement Board which meets regularly to discuss policing matters in Hackney in an open, public setting. Set up by Jennette Arnold, our local London Assembly Member and our representative on the Metropolitan Police Authority, the Board has tackled many of the issues that most concern residents in Hackney: anti social behaviour, youth crime, gang activity and other issues of concern.
One of the growing concerns in the south east of the borough, particularly around the Shoreditch neighbourhood, has been the perception of an increase in homophobic crime and a couple of notable violent assaults. There has also been a series of posters being put up around Shoreditch and parts of Tower Hamlets which have inflamed feelings.
As a result, the Community Engagement Board has decided to address these concerns with an open meeting.
"Hackney Community Engagement Board invites you to hear how the police, and partners are keeping the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities safe in Hackney, raise awareness around homophobic and transphobic crime and discuss strategies to deal with itsimpact on individuals and the community.
Speakers include:
Meg Hillier MP
Borough Commander Steve Bending
Jennette Arnold Member of the Metropolitan Police Authority
Musical entertainment from young people at Stoke Newington School and networking time."

Alan welcomed this event: "The LGBT community in Hackney has grown substantially over recent years and this event is an important one to ensure that the police and council hear clearly what the needs are from the community.
"Homophobic crime is thankfully rare in our borough, but when it does happen, it can have devastating impacts both on the individual(s) concerned, and the wider LGBT community.
"Come along, stand up and be heard - equality always requires hard work from all of us."
